WonderGround Gallery Apperance

The year is almost over and I can't thank everyone enough for all the support I've had, especially at the fairs and conventions.  Freelancing is a hard struggle but completely worth it when I get to see the look on someone's face when they watch one of my pop-ups open and fold flat again.

I'm making one last appearance this year before heading home to the Midwest for the holidays.  If you're in the Anaheim area, be sure to stop by Downtown Disney's WonderGround Gallery on Saturday, December 14 & Sunday, December 15 from 1pm - 4pm!  I'll be outside doing a meet n' greet and signings of my some stuff you can purchase in the store throughout December - like pop-up reindeer, gift tags, advent calendars, greeting cards, and even a few prints

For anyone who can't make it to the event  or store and wants to pick up some of my products before the end of the year, you can always order from my etsy shop*I'll be putting my store on vacation starting December 20, 2013 - January 2, 2014.*  So after that you can find stuff my holiday stuff and prints at WonderGround Gallery (in Anaheim) or TR!CKSTER (in Berkeley) and my book at Gallery Nucleus (in Alhambra).

Hope you can make it and if not, happy holidays!  Until next year!

Out of the Shire: A Tribute Exhibition to Middle Earth

I'm sneaking in one last show before the end of the year!

Gallery Nucleus had an open call for submissions for their, Out of the Shire: A Tribute Exhibition to Middle Earth up for most of the year.  I had planned on entering months ago, but got swamped with work on and off that I never found the time.  But Peter Jackson and Lord of the Rings has been a major influence on my life that I just had to find time!

Some of you may not know, but before attending Art Center, I was graduated from USC's film school.  One of the biggest reasons I went was inspired by the Lord of the Rings trilogy!  And without going to film school, I would have never gone to art school!  Who knows where I might be by now had I not?!

I was inspired by the idea of 'rings' and loved the iconic scene of the fellowship on their journey.  If you can, try to see it in person during their opening on Saturday, December 14, 2013 from 7pm - 11pm.  The photos really don't do it justice this time.  To purchase the piece, go here.

CTN Expo 2013

Thanks to everyone who's dropped by during the last two conventions!  Only one more left for this month before Unique LA in a couple of weeks.

Last up is the CTN Animation Expo.  I've attended this expo since it first opened 5 years ago.  By far, it is one of my favorite conventions because it's designed just for the animation industry.  There aren't any co-players (I don't even think they'd allow you to come in if you were dressed up) and instead are just a bunch of amazing artists and the big studios.  It's kind of a mix between a casual convention and business conference.  This is THE expo to be at if you're looking to get into the animation industry.

Hope to see you there!

Designer Con 2013

One down, two to go!

Next up on the convention schedule is Designer Con.  Last year, it was just a one day expo, so I'm happy to see it's expanded into two days instead.

Designer Con started out as a convention mainly for vinyl toys but has since evolved into a convention that focuses on artists and their unique styles. You'll be able to find things from prints, to toys, to plushes, and more!  If you're looking for a quick expo to explore, this is the one!

Crazy 4 Cult: Say Hi to the Bad Guy

A big thanks to everyone who stopped by at APE!  It was a pleasure getting to meet so many people!

Up next for me is the Gallery 1988 opening for their upcoming exhibit, Crazy 4 Cult: Say Hi to the Bad Guys.

Rarely do you find Asian women in cinema and even more rarely are they such bad-asses.  So for my piece, I decided to focus on O-Ren Ishii from Kill Bill.  O-Ren's sequence has that amazing graphic novel-like background story so I tried to keep my piece graphic as well.  I played with the shape of the mat so it felt like the katana she uses.  I also splattered red watercolor over the background to mimic the abundance of blood throughout the film.  Needless to say my workspace was covered with red paint and it looked like I cut off a finger when I was finished.   Fun times!

If you get a chance, be sure to check out the show opening October 18, 2013 from 7-10pm at Gallery1988 (West).

Jackie Huang: Dreaming with Paper (Volume 1)

I'm thrilled to present my first self-published book!

'Jackie Huang: Dreaming with Paper (Volume 1)" is a small 7"x7" square book with 48 pages in full color showcasing a collection of my paper artwork. It also includes some process sketches and some text explaining my inspirations for my art.

As a bonus, the first 50 people to purchase a copy of my book will receive a free limited edition book plate. These hand-made 4"x6" die cut plates feature a red cardinal bird birched amongst white branches on a grey background. Available only for a limited time.  *Note: each bird is individually hand colored so variations from photo will occur.

The books will be available at conventions and my Etsy store until they sell out.  So stop by one of my upcoming events or check it out on my Etsy store!

APE Expo + Dapper Cat

It's just about October and I've got LOTS of new goodies for the conventions I'll be attending for the rest of the year.  You can see all of them on the Events Page of my website (5-6 in total).  Most of them will be located in Los Angeles, but I'll be attending APE in San Francisco in mid-October.

I'll be debuting my first compilation book which will feature a collection of my work!  It's at the printers right now so more details will follow as we get closer to the event.

Besides the book, I'll also be bringing a couple new originals with me.  One of them is below - Dapper Cat!

So if you're in San Francisco, please drop by my table (and Helen's) to say hi!

Doll Business Cards

A while back I was asked by a friend to create some business cards for her. She was a doll stylist so always had this idea of paper-cut, fold out dolls as her card.

I die cut these dolls and then tri-folded them so they could be given out flat.  On the top doll her my friend's name and profession, and then the second doll has her contact info, and the last doll has a small smile on its face.

It was a pleasure to work with Jen to produce these fun gals!

A Pop-Up Proposal (Desmond + Angeline)

Desmond emailed me wanting to do a special pop-up proposal for his girlfriend.  I usually do several spread and the book is almost always vertical, but after speaking with Desmond, I decided to do something different.I'll be honest, having to pop-up the ocean is a quite a challenge since it's very, very, flat.  Thus, I decided that a single spread that was horizontal would work much better for what Desmond wanted.  I'm glad he took a chance with me because I loved the way it turned out!  I look forward to possibly doing a multi-page book horizontally sometime in the future.

A Pop-Up Proposal (Louis + Haliey)

May must be the month of love because I'm always flooded with lots of requests for pop-up proposals!  I love doing them, but am always sad I have to turn a few down since it's also the month of my marriage anniversary and a trip is usually planned.

However, I'm happy to showcase another pop-up proposal book I did for Louis and Hailey!  They had such a cute story:  During their courtship, they realized they actually went to the same middle school together.  When they reviewed their old year books, they found an honor roll photo where they were standing right next to each other!  Little did they know back then, that their future spouse was right there.  Some things are just meant to be.

A big congrats to Louis and Hailey!

A Pop-Up Proposal (Lubo + Natalia)

I love it when love blossoms!  Literally in this case, as I was asked to design a special pop-up proposal page.  Rather than re-creating the proposal scene where it was going to happen, Lubo asked me to do something different - so this time the ring was hidden inside a blooming flower.

Doing pop-up proposals is one thing I'm consistently happy doing - it's so nice to know that the work I create is going to change two people's lives.  Lubo's pop-up book was extra special too since we used his ideas to create text that would tell a story (rather than their specific story).

I'm thrilled with the way it turned out!  Congratulations to Lubo and Natalia.  Thanks for letting me help in your love story!
