10th Anniversary & A Paper Artist's Wedding

Today marks the 10th anniversary of the day I found the love of my life.  I'm lucky to say that this past May, I got to marry my high school sweet heart.

Being a paper fanatic, I tried to incorporate paper into as many aspects of our wedding as possible.  With the help of an amazing friend, we wound up hand crafting over 400+ individual flowers into bouquets.  If there was something that I could customize for our wedding, I did.   So I wound up creating custom candle wrappers and seating cards to give our tables a pop of color.  All the programs and table numbers were printed and die-cut at home.  Even our takeaways were little Moleskin notebooks that I silk screened our wedding song title onto which became the 'theme' of our wedding. It was a very big DIY kind of wedding, but I think it came out better because everything was tailored to our story.

I couldn't be more thankful for my husband, Frank.  After spending the last 9.5 years apart doing long distance, I'm grateful to get to spend the rest of our lives together, at last.  Happy 10th Anniversary, Frank!

Curiosities Exhibition

Talented couple Mike Yamada and Victoria Ying have been collaborating on animation-inspired illustrations for some time. Most recently, the duo set out on a Kickstarter.com book project that successfully funded more than ten times their original goal!  "Curiosities: An Illustrated History of Ancestral Oddity" is the tale of a brother and sister who inherit an old, mysterious mansion and all of the odd relics that are housed inside within. In celebration of the book's release, the couple has teamed up with Gallery Nucleus to present a very curious exhibition, indeed! Over 40 talented artists have imagined themselves exploring the oddities and creatures that one may discover in an ancient, spooky mansion.

I'm happy to say I'll be participating as an artist!  So if you get chance, please stop by the gallery and check out my piece on display from Oct 27 - Nov 4, 2012!

Mike and Victoria will also be doing a workshop before the opening where they'll each share about their process while creating the book and live digital painting demonstrations.

Lalaloopsy Sets

A big thanks to everyone who came out to the RAW event last Friday!  It was awesome to showcase with so many talented artists and meet new people!

I've been waiting a while to post about this until they hit the shelves, but I'm proud to say I was lucky enough to have worked with some amazingly talented people to build these Lalaloospy sets.  Lalaloopy is a line of dolls produced by MGA Entertainment.  Believe it or not, all of these sets are acutally hand built.  At first glance, I thought thy were just all Photoshop-ed together, but nope!  Everything is individually crafted (sometimes multiple times) to get the best set possible.

My role was mainly to help them build small props to fill out the set.  Sometimes it was out of paper, (like the accordion from Charlotte Charades) but other times it was out of other materials (like the differently shaped felt clouds or even the wooden bridge Mango Tiki).  But the main set builder and set dresser do incredible jobs!  These are just a few that I helped out on.  The rest are hitting the shelves throughout the rest of the year.  Pretty amazing stuff!

Fountain of Tartu Pop-Up

After my pop-up proposal, I got asked to do another pop-up.  This time, it was requested by a lovely girl named Denise in Italy.  She commissioned me to do a pop-up of her kissing her boyfriend in front of the Fountain of Tartu as a gift.  It was such a sweet idea and I had a lot of fun doing it!

All Together Now: A Tribute to The Beatles

I couldn't have been more excited when I was asked to do a piece for Gallery Nucleus' "All Together Now: A Tribute to The Beatles." I'm a huge fan of the golden oldies music - it's on in my car all the time and no, I'm not that old.  I just love the catchy tunes!  So I was super excited to get to do a piece inspired by one of the greatest bands ever!

I choose to do two pieces for the show based off their music.  To me, the lyrics to The Beatles' music have always been moving, almost like poems.  So I was inspired to do work that involved type to showcase their words.

The first piece was inspired by their song, "Here Comes the Sun".  I first heard this song my freshmen year at USC from a really great friend.  He said it was his go-to song whenever he was feeling down.

After the first piece, I started thinking about day vs night.  As I was working through the first piece, I had only Beatles music on and the song, "Imagine" came on.  I was listening and heard the lyrics, "You may say/ I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one/ I hope some day you'll join us/ And the world will be as one." The idea of 'dreamers' fit with my thoughts of creating a night image so I went with it.  This piece was also heavily inspired by Van Gogh's 'Starry Night' - must be because I just got back from Paris...

Hope you guys enjoy and can make it to this show sometime too!  Visit my Etsy shop if you're looking for these as prints!

Join Nucleus as we celebrate 50 years of the Fab Four with a tribute exhibition featuring the works of an exciting group of diverse artists who have all "come together" to honor this legendary act.
